Character: Rozalin
Series: Disgaea 2
Age: 17
History:

All was peaceful once on a little backwater human world called Veldime, till an Overlord named Zenon appeared and cast a curse over all who lived there. Humans started transforming into demons and the world began to change into a Netherworld. All except one. A single human still existed. Except, this isn't about him. This is about Zenon's daughter.

Rozalin was brought up locked away from the outside world in a huge manor, with hundreds of servants to attend to her every whim. Then at the age of 17, she suddenly found herself no longer in her mansion. She was accidentally summoned by the human, Adell, and his demon family. They were trying to summon Overlord Zenon, whom Adell desired to defeat to save his family. Unfortunately, Adell and Rozalin were now bound by a contract from the summoning till conditions were met. It was hard for her to understand when Adell promised he'd protect her and return her safely to her father.

At first she tried to rid herself of Adell, attempting to lure him into traps to kill him. Unfortunately, they generally failed or backfired miserably, and soon she'd started growing a liking for him and his family. Then she finally did get a chance to meet with her father, but it was not the meeting she had hoped for. He ordered his servants to capture her, return her to the mansion and to wipe her memories of what had occurred.

Lucky for them, there was also someone else after Overlord Zenon. Etna, a demon lord/ex-vassal to another Overlord, had come to Veldime with her sights on defeating the Overlord to claim the title of Overlord herself, all to show up the Overlord she had worked for before. Much to her dismay, she saved the day, allowing them to escape while she beat the crap outta him.

Etna met up with them later, however, confused. She'd won the fight, but had not gained any title like she should have. Convinced he was a fake due to this and not being the father Rozalin had expected they continued on their search for Zenon.

Suffice to say there a lot of time wasting adventures took place, allowing them to meet new people who also joined their rag tag group in effort to track down Overlord Zenon.

One important event, however, was when they met Etna's former employer, Overlord Laharl, who decided to be nosy and attempted to break a curious seal he noticed on Rozalin. He didn't quite break it, but he did weaken it enough that suddenly Rozalin seemed to lose herself to a dark power. Her levels suddenly sky rocketed, she easily defeated Laharl, who beat a hasty retreat. A slap from Adell brought her out of it.

Finally, they did actually make it to the castle of the last boss Overlord Zenon.

Heavily drained, Overlord Zenon was weakened, having been fighting off other Overlords who were trying to defeat him, but it seemed he still had enough cause after the group fought him, he still wasn't finished. He began to then drain more power from the humans, saying he'd spare them all if Rozalin turned herself over to him. Rozalin decides she has no choice, but then something deep inside her spoke to her, offering her power. Wanting to be able to save her friends, she gives in.

Rozalin is over taken by a dark power and it's revealed she is the REAL actually Overlord Zenon. She once defeated the fake Zenon and thus he sought revenge. When he discovered she'd had herself reincarnated to escape the her violent existence, he took the on the name "Zenon" and kidnapped her from the Snow Clan (a clan of demons that lived on Veldime, that he nearly destroyed entirely) fifteenth years ago. He raised her as his own daughter, gaining satisfaction that she saw him as someone superior. The Zenon imposter explained all this to the group, but the real Zenon was not interested in his story. Enraged, he attempted to attack her, but his power was nothing to her. Releasing a massive attack, the imposter is entirely destroyed.

She then turned on the group, ready to destroy them too, but Adell steps forward, despite the danger to himself, and ends up kissing her to snap her out of it. And thus all is well! "Zenon" is gone and the curse is gone, so now Veldime can begin to heal.

Canon Point: Just a bit after the final fight with Zenon... enough so that Rozalin has calmed down enough from a certain kiss to not be still attempting to fill someone with bullets.

Personality:

Anyone who initially meets Rozalin will pretty quickly get the feeling they're in the presence of a spoiled princess. Given that she was raised as such, it's not terribly surprising. She spent almost her entire life closed away in a huge mansion where she was given everything she could ever want, with a mansion filled with over a hundred servants to attend to her every whim. As a result, Rozalin can be rather selfish, haughty, extremely stubborn, and bossy. Considering herself nobility, she considered everyone below her. She was used to getting her way and settling for little but the best, having always lived in luxury. Settling for anything less is still very disagreeable to her, but she has come to accept she sometimes has to, when push comes to shove; expect to still hear complains about it, however. She's good at complaining. She tends to come across as being very no-nonsense; she has better things to do than to listen to foolishness. While she does still does consider herself to be of high standing, she has come down to earth a little. She'd still rather not have to do things for herself, but she no longer looks down upon people like Adell's family.

Despite all her negatives, she also can be a surprisingly caring individual. She has a bigger heart than many demons, disagreeing with child kidnapping (when Adell's two siblings are kidnapped), feeling bad for the treatment the prinnies receive, and feeling family is something that should be treasured. Despite never having actually met her father, she still appreciated him for everything he had done for her and felt that she loved him. Love is an unusual feeling for any demon to openly admit to; many demons claim to not feel love--keyword there being claim. These feelings might be due to being closed away from the world all her life and not really being exposed to normal demon behaviour.

She is fairly intelligent, but much of it is book smarts, as she spent a great deal of her time studying from books, so a lot of common knowledge something of a mystery to her. Even if she does know about something, it's limited to what the book had written. She's very ignorant of the general ways of life, having spent so long closed away and being provided everything at her finger tips. Cleaning and cooking, for example, she'd be at a complete loss for, assuming one can convince her to do such things to begin with. Despite being so clueless about the outside world, she's come a long way ever since she was first summoned by Adell's mom, but still there's still a great deal she doesn't know or understand. This ignorance does leaves her somewhat liable, even a little gullible, however she's no fool.

Though she originally wanted nothing but to return to her mansion, upon finally actually meeting her father, that desire and the belief that he loved her was largely shattered. She began believing that he couldn't actually be the real Zenon. Surely her real father would not want to confine her and wipe her memories of the outside world away, right? Unfortunately, that was not the case, and her while Zenon wasn't actually truly her father by blood, he had, indeed, been the one who had made sure she was provided for. Her feelings concerning the false Zenon are still something she has to face.

Most demons throw good manners to the wind, but Rozalin strives to always uphold good etiquette and manners; although some of what is considered to be good etiquette could only be what demons might consider as such. Of course, they're known to slip from time to time, usually when she's especially pissed off.

Through her travels with Adell she has come to learn more about the value of friendship, and comes to feel all those in their ragtag group are friends, even Etna. Adell's vast determination she also has come to rather admire and yet it still confuses her why he so steadfastly held onto his promise to protect her. While she vehemently denies it, the battle maniac, as she calls him, has slowly grown on her. While she has trouble still understanding exactly why, she wouldn't wish anything to happen to him nor his family. She, in fact, even tries to protect them and her friends when they finally face Zenon, almost giving in to returning to confinement to allow them to leave.

Truth be told, she does have feelings for Adell. In fact, they might even be feelings of love, but like so many demons, she would not willingly admit to it--she has yet to even admit it to herself. Any actions she makes that could be construed as being something loving or kind, particularly towards Adell, she is quick to deny or find some excuse for. For example, if she were to wrap a wound for him she would do so under the pretense that it's only so he doesn't dirty the rug. She is actually considered to be a class A, tsundere - a fact even in canon she's been called out on.

It's also important to note that she actually has another personality, so to speak, inside her. Being the reincarnation of the true Overlord Zenon, those memories and feelings still reside deep inside her, sleeping. Twice they have been awoken, along with the power that came with it. It's a very unhappy soul who considers themselves to be a "being of solitude". She has been betrayed by all she ever trusted. She does not really wish to fight. She sees everyone as an enemy, who'll she'll destroy if she must, to ensure she is left alone. Both times it's Adell who snaps her out of it. Once via a slap, the second, a hug and a kiss.

Despite being extreme circumstances that broke the seal (the first was another Overlord's sheer nosiness, the second her friends being in danger) that awoke Zenon, Rozalin does still fear being overcome by them again. She also has not yet even begun to come to terms with the truth of her past, as she only just learned the truth.

Skills and Abilities:

Like all demons, Rozalin has a good deal of power at her disposal, although she holds more than most being the reincarnation of a very powerful Overlord. Overlord Zenon was a powerful Overlord, known as the God of all Overlords, who was said to have killed one thousand demon lords and 99 overlords in one night. (The fake Overlord Zenon being the 100th Overlord, whom she spared.) Deciding to escape her violent existence, she went to Veldime and reincarnated, only to be kidnapped by the fake Zenon and all memories of her past, along with power, sealed. Now the seal is broken, and her past life has no seal to keep it locked away as it once was, but it and it's power sleeps deep within her, and isn't easily woken. Rozalin would rather it stay that way.

It would take a pretty big event to awaken Zenon, much less for Rozalin to willingly let it take her over. Even before the events when the events of arriving at Zenon's castle she was worried from what happened when Laharl weakened her seal. Having her consciousness slip away frightened her. She even asked Adell to kill her if she did something that could harm everyone. The only reason she listened to the voice inside her and allowed Zenon to awaken was to have the power to save her friends.

Zenon aside, Rozalin is still a demon, therefore does have both a great deal of demon power and mana at her disposal. She is not half as delicate as she might appear. She can leap high and has does have wings capable of flight to some degree. However, Rozalin is very much the backline fighter. While she holds a good deal of power, her actual physical strength (and defense), while greater than the average human, is quite weak. Not so weak that she doesn't still have a mean left hook, but plenty weak enough that it would certainly not be difficult to overpower her, especially if she was taken off guard. While she has learned to fight, she needs distance between her and her opponent.

Her main weapon of choice is a gun. (Though she also does have some skill with bows and staffs.) Rozalin's personal gun, the Noble Rose, is a small pocket pistol, modelled from a derringer, except there's no way to load bullets into her gun. All guns in the Netherworld seem to be enchanted to allow the user to have an infinite amount of bullets. There also is a lack of a safety catch. She also has the ability to use a wide number of special attacks with a gun. Tri-blast, Gaia Blast, Proximal Shot, Shooting Stars, Totenkreuz, Inferno and Cocytus' Rage. (Viewable here!)

She also has a couple special moves. Special abilities are techniques only one individual has, and are usually their most strongest abilities. Rozalin's three include, "Rose Thorns" - she pulls a machine gun out from *who-knows-where, firing it; "Kneel Before Me" - an ability that inspires other people to boost their strength, magic or hit. And her most powerful move: Rose Liberation Which is basically a ball of pure energy, delivered in a massive Ice spell. It's blasty; it's icy - it hurts. (When Zenon is in control of her, the move is called "Dark Liberation". More powerful, less ice, more blasty and deadly.) (Her specials are viewable here!)

(*aka dimensional pocket... like many video game and anime characters, this is definitely a thing Disgaea characters have.)

What Rozalin also lacks in physical, she also makes up for with magic. She does have quite good magic ability and defense. Her chosen element is ice spells and she is fully capabil of casting the first four ice spells: Ice, Mega Ice, Giga Ice and Omega Ice. She is not so skilled however to use the two higher versions. However, Rozalin doesn't carry a staff with her, thus she has no magical amplifier to improve the strength and ability to control the spritual elements more accurately. Disgaea magic involves spell casting with a chant, mana and spiritual forces (aka the elements: Fire, Ice, Wind, and Star. There is also "Unknown", which is a catch basen for every other type such as, dark, light, life and holy.) Magic is different than that of special abilities, which make use of a person's own inner spiritual force and their own demon power. (More about Disgaea magic from the World Book is readable here.)

Though she is able to use magic, she'll generally reach for her gun first, before even thinking of using magic. None-the-less, it is an option open to her if a situation might call for it.

Despite all this power, one can still only use so much. In game mechanics give them something called SP. SP is basically mental energy. (According to the game Disgaea Infinite.) Doing things takes thought and concentration. One can only do so much before they become tired and need to rest or eat something. This is why it affects raw demon power abilities and magic alike; the more powerful and concentration heavy the ability, the more draining it is. And then Rozalin is Rozalin. Even if she could have it in her to keep going, she's very likely to demand to rest if she's starting to feel tired.

Battle aside, Rozalin does have some notable abilities. She's book smart, for starters. She lacks a ton of common know-how, but does still know a great deal; it's just not always useful for the situations she finds herself in. Reading has also given her a very good vocabulary; she speaks with very little slang partially because of it. She also does have some leadership qualities. She's used to ordering people around, thus can have a rather commanding presence, when she puts her mind to it.

One might also count being able to battle in a giant poofy dress with high heels a talent, right?

Lastly, something most Nippon Ichi characters have the ability is to poke at the fourth wall. It's always their own and usually leaves non-fourth wall characters simply scratching their heads more than anything. Generally it's things like speaking of the "last boss" or they'll refer to getting stronger as leveling. (Personally I generally brush the fourth wall carefully, prefering fourth walls to be more clever than outright. )

First Person Sample:

Rescue me? Rescue me?! What exactly was I being rescued from, hm? As far as I could tell, there was nothing I needed rescuing from. And, if there was, I'm certain it was something my friends and myself could more than adequately handle without some dragon coming along and whisking me away with barely an explanation! At least the last time I was forcefully removed from my home, my summoners had the decency to explain what precisely was going on. This was a kidnapping; to call it anything else is nothing short of stupidity.

That said, I demand that one of these dragons "Un-rescue" me this instant!

...

Hmph. Where is that fool and his promise to protect me now...

Third Person Sample:

Rozalin had managed to calm down a little since leaving "Zenon's" castle with the others. Well, perhaps calm was not exactly the description of her state, but the fool who'd seen fit to kiss her was at least no longer in any danger from her bullets. Not to say she wasn't still angry at him; oh, she was furious. The nerve of that idiot just suddenly kissing her like that!

Although, truth be told, she wasn't sure what would have happened if he hadn't found a way to snap her out of it, though she feared it could have been terrible. She'd told him to kill her if she was putting them in danger, but no! He didn't listen to her at all. He must have still been clinging that promise of his. Still, why kiss her? He'd slapped her the time before, which had worked well enough. She couldn't understand it though; he'd never done anything like that before. She also couldn't understand why her stomach fluttered and her face turned red at just the thought of the kiss. At least she was alone, so no one could see her looking flustered.

While Adell's family had disappeared into their home to celebrate the end of Zenon's curse upon them, Rozalin had decided to linger outside, saying she needed some time alone. There was, after all, a great deal on her mind and it wasn't just the kiss. It was something she was trying to not think about, but it was incredibly hard not to. In ways she preferred puzzling over the kiss to the alternative:

She was Overlord Zenon.

Well, rather she was the reincarnation of the god of all overlords, Overlord Zenon. Either way, it was nothing short of an epiphany. It was a revelation Rozalin felt she might have been happier not knowing. Not that it wasn't good to finally know the truth, but she wasn't sure how to even begin to deal with this fact. Her entire world had been turned on upside down. Everything she'd ever known suddenly was a lie. Her whole life had been a lie. She didn't even know how to begin to make sense of it all or knew how to feel

Perhaps now wasn't the time to...

Turning her gaze back to Adell's home, she realized she wasn't as alone now as she'd thought she was. His familiar form was easy to recognize, made into a silhouette from the light streaming out of the front door.

Perhaps now wasn't the time to be alone either.

Rising from the pot she had sat down on, she made her way back to the house.
